Here is the calendar to print, or if you’d rather, make your own!
Establishing a daily reading habit can be challenging, and it takes dedication! So a few tips below might help you get into the routine:
It's important to remember that reading for 20 mins as a daily habit doesn't have to disappear with every holiday, birthday, long weekend etc. It's important to reinforce habits over holidays.
Reading ONLY at bedtime is not ideal, especially for kids that need support with deep processing and focus.
Reading first thing in the morning is a really good practice to implement over breaks, or even during the regular weeks - my daughter loves to read to the family in the car on our way to school.
Reading before tech time can be a great motivator!
New chapter books are a huge motivator (if you need recommendations on great books to try, post in our FB group!)
Reading along with your child is also motivational for most :)
In addition to the above, it’s also important to consider what motivates your child specifically! We all have a different love language!
Spend some time talking about love languages and motivation with your kids. Discuss what you can do as parents to fill that love language cup as a reward for reading each day.
It’s also fun to point to the motivations of book characters or movie characters too, to get your child thinking about what they love receiving most. There is so much information online about love languages and motivation but my advice is to keep this very simple and intuitive - have fun with it! And then get to reading ;)
